It was a gathering of dignitaries, heads and representatives of different socio-political groups and their members in Akwa Ibom State, when the Union of Progressive Minds, UPM, was dedicated to God for guidance. The dedication service which was held at the Mount Zion Light House Full Gospel Church, Obio Imo Lane, Uyo, also had in attendance patrons of the organization.
UPM, in line with its slogan of togetherness, is approaching mobilization of membership from a very unique and novel angle. Their strategy, which, as learnt, is fast yielding result, is to bring together persons from across the length and breadth of the state to chart a course of good governance in Akwa Ibom state.
Speaking while performing the dedication rites, the Presiding Pastor of the Church, Apostle Akaninyene Akpan, extolled UPM leadership for seeking the face of God in their quest to enthrone good governance in the state.
Pronouncing blessings upon the group, the man of God assured that nothing shall be insurmountable for them.
He noted that good governance remained the desire of every citizen, adding that any group that sought to mobilize the populace towards enthroning governance, must be encouraged spiritually.
Speaking during the dedication service, the National President of UPM, Rt. Hon. Edet George, while appreciating the leadership of the church for providing them with the opportunity to seek the face of God, said the group, as the name implied, was a platform for like-minded progressives.
“Union of Progressive Minds is a platform for progressives in the state, who yearn for good governance. It is a coalition of support groups for the All Progressives Congress, APC. We came together, immediately after the 2019 elections to form the UPM for the purposes of keeping the like-minded progressives together.
UPM is a coalition, consisting mainly of heads and representatives of APC support groups. Our belief is that the best strategy to winning an election is mobilization of real voters. So, what the UPM has been doing since 2019 is to mobilize the Akwa Ibom electorate”.
Referring to his members while addressing the Church, Rt. Hon Edet, a former Councillor and Caretaker Chairman for Nsit Atai local government area continued, “those you see here are just heads and representatives of their respective groups scattered across the state.
So far, we have over one hundred socio-political groups who have registered with us. Very soon, we shall be embarking on various activities. That is why we thought it wise to first of all, come here to thank God for sustaining us this far and also to seek His wisdom and guidance in our future engagements”.
The event was attended by dignitaries, members and executives of UPM, notable amongst whom were a former Chairman for Ibesikpo Asutan local government area and former Senatorial aspirant; Hon (Bishop) Ekpe James, a media personality and activist; Imaobong Akpanakpan and Hon Emmanuel Asanga.
Others were a former Chairmanship candidate for Uruan local government area; Dr. (Mrs.) Theresa Edem, Obong (Hon) Ime Udosen, PST Aniekan Archibong and a host of others.
