“…we share the concerns of the unions and the generality of Nigerians, the WASSCE SC is going on across the member countries of WAEC and the Nigerian child should not be put to a disadvantage of missing the exam”

In a move amidst looming nationwide strike action, the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has reassured students and stakeholders that the ongoing examinations will not be disrupted. Mrs T.A.Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller of Ekiti State, West Africa Examinations Council, issued a statement underscoring that the strike scheduled to commence on Monday will not affect the examinations, both in Ekiti State and nationwide.

In a letter titled, “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89, Mrs Lawson notified Principals and school heads in Ekiti State late on Friday about the impending strike. She made it clear in the missive that the WASSCE SC 2024 examinations will be conducted as per the initial schedule, without any delays.

Acknowledging the concerns raised by the labor unions, Mrs Lawson stated, “The attention of Management has been drawn to a notice of the Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC effective, Monday, 3rd June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.” 

She further stressed that the burden faced by the unions should not be transferred to the students by disrupting their examinations in Nigeria and other West African countries.

“In as much as we share the concerns of the unions and the generality of Nigerians, the WASSCE SC is going on across the member countries of WAEC and the Nigerian child should not be put to a disadvantage of missing the exam.

For the aforesaid reason, WAEC will conduct the exam and School Principals, Supervisors, parents and the general public should please take note and make adequate arrangements for their candidates to sit (for) the exam”

The assurances provided by Mrs Lawson have quelled fears among students and parents, ensuring that the ongoing examination process remains uninterrupted despite the upcoming strike. This development showcases the commitment of the West Africa Examinations Council to upholding the integrity of the examinations and prioritizing the academic interests of the students.
