*Police, residents must be vigilant -Respondent

A yet-to-be identified man believed to be in his thirties has died after reportedly being electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal electric cable at Mbierebe Obio, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA. Mbierebe Obio falls within Uyo metropolis of Akwa Ibom State.

According to an eyewitness, Samuel Udonquak who posted on his Facebook timeline, the incidence occurred in the early hours of today, Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

The post which was reposted virally read thus “This criminal got electrocuted while trying to cut electric cables at Mbierebe Obio, in the early hours of today.
This is what we call die in active service”

As at the time of this report, the identity of the deceased alleged felon could not be ascertained.

Efforts to get a response from the police authorities within the affected jurisdiction were unfruitful as inquiries via the telephone number of the State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.

Our paper gathered that there have been cases of vandalism of electric transformers within this area. A respondent in the area who confided in this reporter said a similar vandalism had thrown sections of Ikot Akpan Abia in the same Ibesikpo Asutan LGA into blackout for close to two years.

He called on security agencies and residents to be more vigilant in order to prevent the vandals, whom he described as “men of the underworld” from further discomforting the larger populace.
