Omoyele Sowore has been arrested by men of Nigerian Immigration Service. He was picked up this morning at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos upon his return from the United States of America.Sowore who confirmed his arrest this morning, Sunday, in a post on his verified Social Media handles nevertheless, urged Nigerian citizens to ensure that the upcoming

FearlessINOctober protests proposed to kickoff on 1st October, 2024 hold in case his detention is prolonged.

According to Sowore “I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA to the MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me. This is not unexpected because i have always known that It is part of the broader clampdown by the fascist @officialAbat regime on dissent and their fear of the upcoming #FearlessINOctober revolt.

In case this becomes another prolonged and protracted detention, I urge our citizens to ensure they ALL stop tyranny by all means acceptable and necessary, by engaging in the planned series of direct actions slated for October 1st and beyond”


Meanwhile, aggrieved by the news of the activist’s arrest, some Nigerian youths in their numbers blocked the entrance to the airport, vowing never to allow anyone come into the airport or go out.

A thread monitored by our correspondent stated this “Omoyele Sowore is not being allowed out of the airport so Nigerians have blocked the airport. They either allow Sowore go or no one leaves”

Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian human rights activist, politician, is also the founder of an online Newspaper, Sahara Reporters. He has been a prominent voice against corruption and bad governance in Nigeria.

Sowore had earlier been arrested and detained by the Nigerian government for calling for a nationwide protest against bad governance, tagged #RevolutionNow. His arrest had sparked widespread outrage and calls for his unconstitutional release. Sowore has received several awards for his human rights work, including the Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International in 2008.
