…insists on consensus

In a bid to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presents a united front as they go into The National Assembly Leadership Elections next week, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR today, Tuesday, June 6, interacted with The Speakership Aspirants at The Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Meanwhile, it would be recalled that while the ruling party nominated a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and former Senate Minority Leader; His Excellency, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio as preferred choice for Senate Presidency, Hon Tajudeen Abbas is the APC’s   Choice for the Speakership of the House of Representatives.

Nigeria runs a bicameral Nationa legislature with Senate being the superior with 109 senators, while the House of Representatives with a total number of 360 Honourable members make the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

Baring any last minute change of heart, Akpabio who is also a former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs is likely to emerge as Senate President as he is believed to have in his kitty a total of 73 Senators-elect as well the support of the President; Tinubu.

Tinubu who was elected on the platform of the APC on February 25, was sworn in on May 29, 2023 as the 16th President of the world’s most populous black nation. Leadership of the 10th National Assembly is expected to emerge on the 13th June, 2023.

As at the time of this report, major contenders  for the Senate Presidency, elected on the platform of the APC had stepped down for Akpabio in obedience to the directive of the Party.
