…demand his immediate sack, fair play

By Ime Silas

Akwa Ibom State Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, APC, located on Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, as at the time of this report was on fire following protests that emanated from the conduct of the ongoing Ward Congresses of the party.

Enraged faithful of the nation’s ruling party, which is also the main opposition party in Akwa Ibom state, besieged the State Headquarters of the APC this Saturday morning, accusing the National Secretary of the Caretaker and Convention Planning Committee, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe of allegedly manipulating the Congress processes for his 2023 gubernatorial ambition.

Speaking, one of the protesting youths, Hon Clement Awakessien, a former Chairman for Nsit Ibom local government area of the state noted that any list whatsoever, published by the Dr. Ita Udosen-led State Caretaker Committee that did not include inputs of other notable elders of the APC in Akwa Ibom state, would not stand.

According to Awakessien, elders of the party such as the Honourable Minister, Niger Delta Affairs; Sen Godswill Akpabio, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs; Sen Ita Enang, former Petroleum Minister; Atuekong Don Etiebet, among others, had not been carried along in the processes.

While blaming the crisis on the Akwa Ibom-born National Caretaker Secretary, Sen Akpanudoedehe, the youth leader maintained that any attempt to undermine the interests of other stakeholders of the party in the state would mean a direct invitation to anarchy with its attendant failures in future elections.

Other protesters while expressing their frustrations over what they described allegedly, as selfishness in handling the ongoing congresses of the party in the state, called for the immediate sack of the National Caretaker Secretary, Sen Akpanudoedehe.

It could be recalled that elders of the APC in the state had also accused Sen Akpanudoedehe of manipulating the Congress processes, while also passing a no confidence vote on the State Caretaker Committee of the party.

The elders who acted under the aegis of State Elders Forum of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, 28th July, 2021, in a communiqué jointly signed by representatives from the ten (10) federal constituencies, had demanded, among other things, for an extension of time for the sales of forms for the Congress.

Read the communiqué below:

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE MEETING OF THE STATE ELDERS FORUM OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) AKWA IBOM STATE HELD ON THE 28TH DAY OF JULY, 2021, IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE.

During the just concluded stakeholders meeting of the State Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State held on the 28th day of July, 2021 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, it was unanimously resolved and hereby issues the following statements:

The Elders Forum of Akwa Ibom State APC strongly condemn the running of Party affairs by the Dr. Ita Udosen-led Caretaker Working Committee of Akwa Ibom State APC through his inability and unwillingness to convene a single caucus or stakeholder’s meeting with regards to the upcoming congress also taking directives from the Acting National Secretary to personalize the activities of the Party to achieve his gubernatorial ambition.

The Elders Forum frown at the activities of the acting National Secretary manipulating the Party apparatus in the State for his selfish gubernatorial ambition at the detriment of the entire members of APC in the State.

The Elders Forum has also observed and strongly condemned the process of the sales of Congress forms in the State whereby members are denied free access and right to purchase Congress forms within the stipulated time.

The Elders Forum of Akwa Ibom State disagrees in totality with the idea of the proposed consensus arrangement for the upcoming congress in the State. This is unpopular; therefore, adopting elective congress as the sure way to unite and strengthen the party.

OUR PRAYERS

In a desperate attempt to rescue the Party from collapse in the State, and strengthen it for total victory come 2023 general elections, the State Elders Forum hereby made the following resolutions:

Unanimously opted for an elective congress.

The Elders request for an extension of sales of the congress forms for another 2 to 3 working days to enable the members who were affected by the manipulation of Dr. Ita Udosen-led State Caretaker Working Committee to access purchase, submit and participate in the upcoming congresses.

The Elders Forum of Akwa Ibom State APC has unanimously passed a vote of No Confidence on Dr. Ita Udosen-led Caretaker Working Committee which is being teleguided by the Acting National Secretary for the following reasons:

Manipulating the State Party apparatus for the selfish interest and gubernatorial ambition of the Acting National Secretary.

Denying the eligible Party members access to the purchase of Congress forms.

The State Elders hereby appeal to all the APC National Congress Officials sent to Akwa Ibom State to ensure that everyone is accorded a level playing field in order to achieve a peaceable Congress.

For and on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders we are:
