The source said “It may take a while for family members, friends, and admirers to come to terms with the passing of retired Major-General Edet Adam Akpan of Iwok, Nsit-Attai LGA of Akwa Ibom State.

“The late Major-General Akpan, who held various military postings and rose to the position of Director of the Nigerian Army Education Corps, reportedly died in the early hours of Friday, May 15, in his home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, according to sources close to the family.

“Easy going and soft-spoken, Major-General Akpan was the fourth Director-General the Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). An old boy of Etinan Institute, the University of Ibadan (UI), and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), he will be remembered for rebranding the NYSC and piloting it through a challenging period of time in the early 80s following the financial scandal that ended the tenure of his predecessor and undermined public confidence in the once nationally revered scheme”.
