…says project site needs landscaping to aid urban beautification

A former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Uwem Udoma has described Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Works, Prof Eno Ibanga as the worst Works Commissioner ever appointed by any adminstration since the creation of the state in 1987, stating that this is one appointment that was based on political expediency than on merit and competence.

Udoma who spoke to newsmen in Uyo during the weekend said, the state of the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover project alone has proved Prof Ibanga’s gross incompetence when placed side by side with his predecessors on project execution, supervision and maintenance as the Flyover project was commissioned and the environment abandoned to rot to the point of becoming an embarrassing yet avoidable eye sore that does not depicts who we are as a state.

According to the former Deputy Speaker, the environs of the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover project does not measure up to the post commisssioning standard of other similar projects following the inability of the Commissioner to ensure the landscaping of the surrounding areas within the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover vicinity, regretting that lack of periodic sanitation has made the flyover an eye sore to visitors and motorists, and sadly, the flyover is a major entry point into the state from Rivers, Abia, Bayelsa states.

He regretted that if the state had a competent Works Commissioner who is a professional, he would have ensured that the lawn areas of the flyover was embedded with wire protection to wade off intrusion into areas that would have been developed with flowers and trees planted in line with the urban beautification policy of the government, submitting that the dirty and filthy nature of the surrounding areas of the flyover ought not to have been so if Prof Ibanga had the experience and capacity to serve or had the humility to learn on the job as Works Commissioner.

Hon Udoma advised Prof Ibanga that it is not too late to learn hence the urgent need for the Works Commissioner to take a tour to the Itam and Atiku flyovers, the Itam peace column to have a first hand idea of how the landscaping was done, and see for himself how metallic wires were used along the sideways to protect the area and compare the beauty, serenity and ambience of Itam and Atiku Flyovers to that of Ikot Oku Ikono and be honest enough to judge himself to ascertain if he has been fair to the state in terms of competence and job performance.

He advocated for the relocation of the traders within the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover vicinity, stating that the proximity of the trading points to the flyover was naturally bound to defeat the objective of having a serene and environmentally friendly ambience, urging the Governor to order the traders to be moved away from the area.

The former lawmaker said what is happening which no one is talking about is that, of a truth the Ministry of Works under Prof Eno Ibanga is not working and his gross inefficiency and lack of vision is a contributing factor to the collapse of the system,which explains his inability to realize that Urua Ekpa road for instance, which has become totally non motorable is an alternative gate way in and out of Uyo metropolis that ought to have been fixed.

He called on Governor Udom Emmanuel to redeploy Prof Eno Ibanga to another ministry before the state witness a total collapse of critical state infrastructure and appoint a competent professional as Commissioner for Works to reposition the sector in the overall interest of the state.
