‘Buhari is the only ‘former President’ elected on the platform of the APC having been the first so elected’

As the hunger protest entered Day six in some states, a video has emerged showing youths in Daura, Katsina State, destroying the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the street processions.

The situation, which has been deteriorating over the past few days, has proved difficult for security agencies to contain, especially in northern Nigeria.

Video footage circulating on social media shows a large crowd of young people forcibly entering the APC secretariat in Daura.

They can be seen removing the roof of the building and destroying other facilities in the building.

The protests, which began in response to a severe economic crisis and skyrocketing inflation, have spread across various states, including Katsina.

Eyewitnesses report that the atmosphere in Daura was charged with tension as the youths, driven by frustration over worsening living conditions, targeted the APC secretariat.

In response to the escalating situation, security forces have been deployed to monitor the protests and prevent further violence.

Recall that Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), a former military Head of State emerged as civilian President in the year 2015 on the platform of the APC. He defeated the then sitting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, bringing to an end the reigns of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP had been ruling Nigeria since 1999 following the return of democracy. Former military Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd) was the first civilian President to be elected on the platform of the PDP.

Obasanjo was succeeded by former President Yar’dua who died in office, few years into his first term. The late Yar’dua who was also of the PDP, was succeeded by his Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Buhari is the only ‘former President’ elected on the platform of the APC having been the first so elected.
