The Directorate of State Securities (DSS) also known as State Security Service (SSS) has charged the immediate-past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); Mr. Godwin Emefiele to Court on charges bordering on money laundering, threat to National Security, abuse of office, etc.
Godwin Emefiele, who was CBN Governor under the immediate-past President of Nigeria, Maj. General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), was suspended by current Nigeria’s President; His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, few weeks after assumption of office. Tinubu who was candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 2023 Presidential election, emerged winner and was sworn in on May 29, 2023 amidst rumours of impending nationwide chaos.
The embattled former apex bank boss, few months to the end of the outgone administration, had introduced some monetary policies which led to biting cash crunch across the country. The policies which did not go down well with majority of Nigerians, saw some governors challenged same at the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court judgement which was against the policies, especially rejection of the old Naira notes by Nigerian Commercial Banks on the prompting of the nation’s Central Bank, was initially rejected and dishonored by the then CBN Governor; Emefiele.
