Counting days to the October 5 local government election in Akwa Ibom State, the leaders and people of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, in sober mood have pledged to honour the wish of the departed first lady by standing by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to secure total victory.
While receiving the state delegation of the party in what was a modest convergence of stakeholder and supporters dressed in black, the leaders expressed sadness over the demaise of the first lady who hailed from the area by birth, pledging to see to the victory of PDP which they said would have been her wish if she were alive.
The senator representing Akwa Ibom South in the Senate, Sen. (Dr) Ekong Sampson, who conveyed the position of the people, said, “Mkpat Enin is known for dancing, singing and for positive disposition, but circumstances have made us sober. We could not have had a rally today, but to meet in this mood to reflect our hearts. Even though we are mourning, it is our belief that our departed mother will watch us from heaven and will be happy to see the victory that our party will clinch on October 5.”
“We also wish to express our firm stand with Gov Umo Eno. He is our man and we will remain his key supporters”, he said.
Also speaking, the Transition Committee Chairman of Mkpat Enin, Lady Mercy Bassey, stated, “initially, we did not wish to have the campaign in Mkpat after the loss of our shining light and our ambassador, but we have resolved to turn our lemon into a lemonade. We will preserve her legacy and honour her. Mkpat Enin has never failed the party and will not fail now.”
On his part, the representative of the state chairman of the party who led the team to Mkpat Enin, Hon Ibanga Brownson, said that the party sympathizes with the people of the area for the loss of their daughter, assuring that the party is with them.
“We are not coming to campaign, we are coming for a family meeting in Mkpat Enin. We understand deeply what has happened to the people of Mkpat Enin as we sincerely mourn with Mkpat Enin for this loss. This is one loss far too deep to contend with.”
“Like the song writer says, it is well with our souls. It is well with Mkpat Enin. Affliction shall not rise again. What was due and what is due Mkpat Enin, God will make it happen. The party is with you just as you are with the party”, said Brownson.
Others who spoke at the event affirmed that all candidates of the party will return elected on Saturday October 5, 2024.
