COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS AKWA IBOM STATE COUNCIL ISSUED AT THE END OF CONGRESS ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2021 AT THE NUJ PRESS CENTRE, UYO.

Congress, which had in attendance the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Pst. Umo Eno, as a Special Guest, congratulated the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzo on his re-election; the Vice President and Secretary, Zone F, Comrade Opaka Dokubo and Comrade John Angese, respectively, as well as all the National and Zonal Officers for their victory at the 7th Triennial Delegates’ Conference in Umuahia, Abia State.

Congress also congratulated the wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Dr. Martha Emmanuel on her Awards as the First Lady Of The Year (National) in Social Welfare and Justice for Women as well as First Lady Of The Year (South-South) in Education Empowerment (Girl Child).

Congress expressed concern over the activities of criminal elements at Ibom Plaza and urged the State Government to put word to action in its plan to remodel the edifice in order to serve its original purpose, which is recreation.

Similarly, Congress expressed deep concern over the cracks on the burnt building at the corporate headquarters of Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, AKBC, on Udo Udoma Avenue, which it said are signs of imminent collapse and urged the State Government to consider paying compensation to the property owners and pull it down to avert tragedy.

Congress equally congratulated the NUJ Football Team for defeating the Nigerian Medical Association Football Team in a friendly match to mark this year’s National Physicians’ Week.

Congress urged Gov. Udom Emmanuel to give life to the School of Health Technology Bill, Etinan, passed by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, few years ago so that the graduates could participate in the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, and the school could access TETFUND, among other benefits.

While appreciating the State Government for rehabilitating secondary health facilities in the State, Congress also urged the State Government to address the deteriorating state of primary health institutions.

Furthermore, Congress urged the State Government to look into the deplorable state of facilities at the College of Science and Technology, Nnung Ukim, Ikono Local Government Area.

Congress appealed to Akwa Ibom people to go out and obtain their National Identity Number, NIN, and those who have not registered to vote to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to do so.

Congress expressed deep concern over the non-implementation of the recommendations contained in the White Paper submitted to it by the Judicial Panel headed by Justice Umoekoyo Essang (Retd) on Reigners Bible Church collapse, more than four years after the tragedy, which claimed many lives, and urged it to accept the findings and sanction persons indicted in the report for the sake of justice for the victims and their families.
