Medical Doctors operating in Akwa Ibom state have been barred from official duties, including responding to emergencies of whatever magnitude, even in the face of the deadly Coronavirus of which 6 (six) cases have been reported in the state.

Recall that following the spread of Covid-19 in most states in Nigeria, restriction of movement has been adopted as one of the measures to curb the spread of the disease by federal and state governments.

Those on essential duties exempted are Health Care workers, security personnel, media workers, etc.

But in defiance of the exemption consideration, Akwa Ibom state Police command, today, Monday, barred the State Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, from performing his official functions.

Preliminary checks reveal that the NMA Chairman, Dr Nsikak Nyoyoko, was on his way to distribute PPE to medical workers in the state but was reportedly ordered to return home by a Police officer identified as Ifiok at Udoudoma Road, by Aka Itiam Road, Uyo, on ‘orders from above’.
