The Honourable Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, has insisted that the only way to bring sanity and accountability to the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, was to allow the forensic audit to succeed so that those who embezzled funds meant for development of the oil-rich region could be exposed.

The Honourable Minister who stated this last Monday hinted also that closing down the NDDC, would cause chaos, militancy and insurrection.

Akpabio, whose ministry supervises the Niger Delta Commission, dropped these hints while making his presentation to the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC.

The Committee which is probing alleged financial impropriety, had invited the Interim Management Committee, IMC, of the NDDC, headed by Prof. Pondei, along with the Honourable Minister.

In his remarks, Akpabio said: “Not just because we are doing forensic audit, the NDDC plays a vital role in ensuring peace and security of the region.

And, 90% or more of the resources of the country on a monthly basis, come from there (Niger delta region).
If you close it (NDDC) down in totality, all that you have will be chaos…and a lot, not just militancy, you will have a lot of insurrection”.

There have been series of allegations and counter-allegations of embezzlements against immediate past and present Managing Directors of the Commission.
